Pay per click advertising started with Overture (formerly called Goto and now called Yahoo!) But it didn't really take off until search engine heavyweight Google got involved with Google Adwords. What's even better is that paid placement enables you to buy your way to the top of the listings! PPC advertising can become prohibitively expensive, depending on the competitiveness of the keyword phrases and the aggressiveness of the competition. In addition, many of the "savvier" search engine users have learned to recognize pay per click results as paid advertising and bypass them without consideration. PPC advertising in the web hosting field is expensive and difficult. Short keywords are almost impossible to use due to extremely high click prices for the advertiser. To save money, experts use large keyword phrase lists that few competitors are bidding on.

Online advertising campaign management can become much more effective - and complex - with the introduction of pay per click (PPC) search engine services. Known as sponsored listings, paid placement, and simply "PPC ads," PPC listings through services such as Overture and Google Adwords offer a way to buy your way to the top of search results for any term you wish. PPC ads typically appear on the right side of a search engine results page, next to the organic results. Companies bid on certain keywords, and the top advertising space goes to the highest bidder. PPC is a simple type of paid advertising that most search engines, including some of the largest ones, now offer.

It requires a bid for a "per-click" basis, which translates to your company paying the bid amount every time the search engine directs a visitor to your site. Advantages of pay per click advertising, cost effective compared to search engine optimization, pay per click advertising can be more cost effective. There is no denying that in the longer run search engine optimization is the best option, but PPC advertising is ideal for websites that are starting up or under search engine optimization. Ad titles starting with "How To", "Secrets to" will also attract more clicks. Depending on whether you are targeting a site visitor or trying to sell a product, keywords like "Discounted", "Benefits" will also find many clicks.

PPC advertising is basically a bidding war. A bid that is higher than yours will lower your position on search engine results, and probably bring you less traffic. PPC advertising has become so popular because it allows you to control advertising spending and gain important insights into how your customers find your products and services online. You can identify what keywords your customers use to locate your Web site, how much it costs to bring new customers to your Web site, which advertising campaign is the most effective, and best of all, pay-per-click advertising allows you to immediately calculate your return on investment (ROI). PPC advertising is a type of search engine marketing where you pay a small fee (it can be as small as a few cents!) every time someone clicks on your ad and visits your website.
